What is #WeAreAradia?

A call to action to build and use your practices to protect and to empower. Stand up. Speak out. Cast proud.

#WeAreAradia says we don’t need a savior, or one voice to save us.  We need to save ourselves, we need to be the teachers.  We need to be the learners and the guides. We need to be the Witches.  It’s a call to stand up for your beliefs.  A message, a call to action to build and use your practices to protect and to empower everyone who needs it. #WeAreAradia is a call across traditions, genders, colors, creeds, ages, and abilities.  We can revel in and honor diversity – AND bring everyone up together.

Who is, or was, Aradia?

Aradia largely comes from Aradia, or the Gospel of the Witches, a book published in 1899 by folklorist Charles Godfrey Leland. Leland devoted much of his life to studying the myth and magic of marginalized people throughout Europe. His goal was to record and preserve it. Aradia comes from Italian folklore, and the story is that the goddess Diana sent her daughter Aradia down to earth to teach people the ways of Witchcraft – so that they may free themselves from their oppressors.

You can find the entire text online here.  There are multiple books on the market as well. One of the best ones is the expanded edition put out by Phoenix Publishing – which includes new translations, new information regarding Leland’s sources, and essays on how this text as influenced modern Paganism.  Alas, it’s currently out of print.

How do I get involved?

That answer will vary from person to person.  Our hope is that through #WeAreAradia we can help people empower themselves and build their communities. We strive to share news, instructions, and other information that help every person practice magical activism and resistance in their own way and ability.  Also, our focus is not just metaphysical, but also taking action through mundane means: exercising your right to vote, encouraging others to do the same, taking part in your local government, standing up for others in your community, taking care of yourself and those around you.
